The world’s most moisturizing shampoo and conditioner happen to be a bar
We are very proud to introduce the most moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and the first-ever curly girl method-approved shampoo and conditioner for coily and kinky hair in bar form. Before we dive deeper into the product itself, let’s talk about coily/kinky hair which includes the hair types 3C as well as 4A, 4B, and 4C.
What is coily, kinky, curly hair?
The shape and intensity of curls is determined by how the hair emerges from the scalp and by the disulfide bonds between hair strands. While follicles of straight hair tunnel vertically from the scalp’s surface and have a round shape, the hair follicles of curly and coily hair angle into the dermis and have a flatter, oval cross section. Depending on the specific angle and the shape of the cross section of the hair follicle, the hair can range from wavy to curly to coily. The flatter the oval is in a cross section, the curlier the hair will be. When follicles are angled/curved, the sebum that is produced in glands in the dermis that line the hair follicles isn’t able to travel the length of the hair as well as with straight hair, resulting in dry hair. Disulfide bonds also contribute to the curl shape and intensity of curly and coily hair. They are formed when sulfur atoms in the proteins in the hair bond together. The more disulfide bonds exist between parts of a hair strand, the more curly the hair is. Coily hair has more disulfide bonds than curly hair, curly hair has more than wavy hair, and wavy hair has more than straight hair. Curly hair also has more disulfide bonds because the follicle shape and angle allow different regions of the hair to be in closer contact with each other.
Given its unique properties, coily/kinky hair is naturally very dry and spongy yet it can range from soft and fine to coarse and wiry. Next to dryness, frizz, breakage, and brittleness are major concerns for coily and kinky hair. Given its special properties and unique challenges, coily/kinky hair requires a very different hair care regime with much more conditioning and moisturizing actives than straight and wavy hair or hair with looser curls. In turn, coily/kinky hair has a lot of beautiful volume so “volumizing” is typically not a concern for this hair type. In addition to a conditioning hair shampoo and an intensely moisturizing conditioner, leave-in conditioner is frequently recommended. The washing frequency is usually much lower and “co-washing” (washing hair only with conditioner) is common.
Curls in coily/kinky hair are very tight and can also have the form of zig-zags. The different types of coily/kinky hair are illustrated in the hair chart below. While our “pink” shampoo and conditioner bars are typically the right choice for waves and curls from 2B to 3B, we developed new, tailored bars for coils and kinks of the types 3C, 4A, 4C and 4D because - while our “pink” range already has rich conditioning effects - very tight curls, coils and kinky hair need even more moisture. Of course, the below hair chart is simplified and depending on how dry, frizzy and brittle curls of the types 3A and 3B are, some people with that hair type might prefer our new “green” bars too.
About our coil care shampoo bar for coily/kinky hair
Our coily/kinky shampoo bar hydrates, replenishes, and restores hair with gentle, sulfate-free cleansing agents that are blended with high levels of silicone-free moisturizing conditioning agents (oils and butters). The bar includes
- Shea Butter which is highly moisturizing for your hair and scalp and lightly coats the hair to seal the cuticle layer in order to keep moisture in the hair, to promote softness and to protect hair from environmental stressors.
- Creatine, an amino acid derivative that is identical to the natural Creatine occurring in the skin. Creatine is called the “hair architect” because it reduces hair breakage and rebuilds the inner hair structure while protecting against heat stress. Creatine builds bridges between different amino acids of the keratin fibers and increases the cross-linking which results in a decrease of fiber breakage and improves the mechanical properties of the hair.
- Ethyl Macadamiate, a moisturizing mixture of macadamia esters from the macadamia ternifolia tropical tree, and a low viscosity, natural silicone alternative. Ethyl Macadamiate adds a protective coat to your hair without weighing it down for less hair breakage and more shine.
