Thinning hair - reasons, prevention

You may notice that you have thinning hair, or the beginning stages of hair loss. You may be recognizing a little more hair in your brush after combing, or a hairline that isn’t quite where it used to be. THe good news? There are wellness routines and haircare routines that you can incorporate into your life to help prevent the continual thinning of your hair!

What is thinning hair?

Thinning hair occurs when the follicle structure in your scalp becomes less dense, i.e. you experience gradual, mild to moderate hair loss. Thinning hair can be caused by a multitude of factors from genetics to lifestyle habits to medical conditions to over-treating your hair with color treatments, perms, or relaxers. Male hair loss is caused by DHT, a hormone that can cause hair follicles to shrink until they become dysfunctional. The truth is that most of what causes hair loss is happening within your body and not when your hair grows out of your scalp. Thus, if you are experiencing permanent hair loss, make sure to seek advice from your health care provider. Hair care products can, however, play a supporting role as they can help stimulate your scalp and provide relief for some scalp conditions that contribute to thinning hair such as flakes and scalp irritation. If you are experiencing thinning hair, we recommend our “maroon” line that was formulated for thinning/aging hair to nourish your hair without over-conditioning it (as that can weigh down your hair) and to help stimulate your scalp. If you are concerned with thinning hair and are also experiencing flakes and itches on your scalp, go with our “blue” shampoo for flakes/itches and our conditioner bar for thinning hair.

Thinning hair is not to be confused with fine hair that can occur as hair cycles change which has a small diameter but still a high hair density.

What causes thinning hair? Are thinning hair and baldness same?

There are many causes, some being hereditary or simply from age, but a major cause is stress. Though thinning hair in men or male pattern baldness is widely known, hair loss in women is also common. Childbirth can be a cause of thinning hair in women, as well as hairstyles that are too tight on the head. Low levels of iron, or protein, can also be contributing factors.

How to prevent thinning hair?

In order to promote healthy hair growth, it may take a bit of a lifestyle adjustment. There are supplements available to help counteract the effects of low levels of iron and protein in your system as well as supplements that can be taken for hair growth. Also, if you find yourself with a bad habit of pulling at your hair or tying your ponytails too tight it would be best to try and avoid it. Exercise can help with stress, especially yoga!
