What is Squalane?
Squalane (sugarcane-derived) is a lightweight emollient that instantly hydrates and delivers numerous skin and hair care benefits. The squalane we use is made from the fermentation of 100% renewable sugarcane and has nothing to do with squalene that is derived from sharks. Sugarcane-based squalane is 100% bio-based, highly pure, cruelty-free and has a higher purity and odor stability than its alternative, olive-based squalane.
How is Squalane used in beauty and hair care?
In skin care, squalane smooths and softens the skin, improves skin firmness, helps brighten the appearance of the skin and repairs the skin barrier function. It is microbiome friendly and promotes microbiome diversity and stability. Clinical results have proven the extensive skin therapy benefits of sugarcane-derived squalane. It has been proven to be skin firming (as defined as a decrease in the surface, volume, and depth of skin deformation), to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and to reduce skin roughness by 28% in 4 weeks. Squalane has been proven to reduce surface skin deformation by 10%, reduce skin deformation volume by 15% reduction, and reduce depth of skin deformation by 5% reduction.
In hair care, squalane has been shown to outperform argan oil across multiple attributes from wet and dry combing energy, hair shine, softness and manageability, hair body and the reduction of frizz and fly-aways. Studies have shown that squalane significantly reduces dry and wet combing force, significantly increases hair manageability and body, reduces fly-aways, and enhances shine and volume. It is also proven to increase hair softness by 2.5x (versus an 1.3x improvement with argan oil), increase shine 24% better than a simpler quat based conditioner, and reduces frizz by 15% (23% better than argan oil).
Firming:
Clinical study has shown a reduction of appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and a 28% reduction in skin roughness, and 14% reduction of TEWL (transepidermal water loss)
Squalane and Sustainability
In contrast to silicones that are commonly used in hair care products, sugarcane based squalane is extremely sustainable. It is derived from the fermentation of 100% renewable sugarcane juice. Sugarcane requires little to no irrigation. It absorbs CO2 and the bagasse that occurs as a by-product from the extraction of sugarcane juice is used for the energy needed for the fermentation facility while any surplus is released into the power grit. Sugarcane based squalane significantly reduces greenhouse gases compared to petrochemicals and protects millions of sharks by offering a better alternative all around.
Sugarcane-based squalane is considered non-toxic and non-irritating. It is non-toxic to the environment and inherently biodegradable. Its EWG ranking is 1, indicating the highest possible safety level.
Our squalane is derived from sustainable Brazilian sugar cane in an eco-friendly production process. It is microbiome-friendly and promotes microbiome diversity and stability.
